El mtro. Gerardo Suzán y el Museo de la Ilustración Mexicana / The master Gerardo Suzán and the Museum of Mexican Illustration

As many illustrators know, we recently learned of the loss of the mtro. Gerardo Suzán one of the most recognized and international Mexican illustrators. The mtro. Geraro Suzán was born in Mexico City in the 60s, studied at the National School of Plastic Arts, lived in several states in the north of the country, had the opportunity to study drawing and engraving in Italy. He was also known for publishing books in the United States for the Latin community, with many publishers, he also published in other countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Italy and Switzerland. I recently coordinated a Diploma in Illustration at the Academia de San Carlos at UNAM. Leaving much of his teachings at UNAM and training many illustrators. To the meter Suzán no longer had to see the emergence of Artificial Intelligence in the arts and design, it would have been interesting to know what he thought of this phenomenon.

I met master Suzán in the 90s when he was finishing studying Graphic Communication at the then ENAP of UNAM. We made a toy book together with Alejandro Magallanes for the Human Rights Commission of the Federal District, we did it with acrylic paint. It was one of the first books I made as an illustrator for children and young people. Magallanes began his career in the Rights Commission, so we saw him often, many before his time as a rockstar of Mexican design. I remember that later Alejandro and the teacher. Suzán did an exhibition in Valle de Bravo, which I went to see taking a truck and thinking it was in Mexico City, it was one of my first trips, I was always a traveler. Then I went to Xalapa, Veracruz to an event of the Poster Biennial.

Returned to the mtro game. Suzán I was left wondering where the legacy of one of the best Mexican illustrators would be kept, and that his farewell was not in Fine Arts, remembering that question that illustration was a minor art, an applied art, the fact is that the painters recognized if they have been fired in Fine Arts but the illustrators have not. So what will happen to the works of many illustrators who have contributed to Mexican culture? Does it mean that illustration has not been recognized as an applied art in Mexico?

Of course there have been illustration exhibitions at the Children's and Young People's Book Fair, where the master Suzán was one of its main promoters, it seems to me that in the 80s, she would have to do more research with Alain Espinoza, one of her generation companions, another prominent Mexican illustrator. Suzán's generation of illustrators was very recognized and generous. Returning to the FILIJ, mtro. Suzán was one of those who promoted the Catalog of Illustrators, a catalog that contributed to creating a publishing ecosystem and the orange economy in Mexico. Then came the creation of the Inviteemos a Leer contest, then over the years the Professionalization Conferences for illustration professionals. Great achievements that were already lost in the most recent editions of the Filij. Being that no organization of illustrators has claimed it, being more accommodating than anything else. Much of the history of FILIJ is preserved in many illustration theses at various universities, at least you can browse some in person at the FAD-UNAM Library. It seems to me that there are other theses in this sense in the Ibero library, due to its interest in the book - album.

The death of the master Gerardo Suzán would have been a good trigger for the creation of a Museum of Mexican Illustration, and in general for greater recognition of illustrators to the national culture, it is known that great Mexican artists were illustrators such as Diego Rivera, such as Julio Ruelas, such as El Chango García Cabral, like Felipe Ehrenberg (who ventured into Comics), like Toledo (who published illustrated books), among others. It would have been a good initiative at the Filij, but we all know what happened with this Fair, from which many things were removed for the benefit of the illustrators and to the detriment of the orange economy.

A Mexican museum of illustration does not sound far-fetched seeing that other countries do have a museum for this applied art such as: MuDI, Museum of Drawing and Illustration (Buenos Aires), Roald Dahl Museum (Great Missenden, England), Tomi Ungerer Museum ( Strasbourg), House of Illustration (London), The Cartoon Museum (London), Seven Stories, National Center for Chidren's Books (London), National Museum of American Illustration (USA), Cartoon Art Museum (San Francisco), The Eric Carle Museum (Amherst, Massachusetts), The Rosenbach Museum (Philadelphia), Book Illustrated (Melbourne, Australia), Chihiro Art Museum (Tokyo), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Bilderbuchmuseum Burg Wissem (Troisdorf, Germany), Dick Bruna Huis (Utrecht , Netherlands), Mitsumasa Anno Museum (Tsuwano, Japan), Belgian Comics Museum (Brussels) and the Caricature Museum (Frankfurt).

As can be seen, there are numerous museums about illustration or illustrated books in the world, leaving Mexico behind, since it is a country of museums, especially in Mexico City, and a museum dedicated to Mexican illustration would not have to be centralized in the city either. capital, could be in other states with a lot of graphic tradition such as Xalapa (birthplace of El Chango Cabral), Oaxaca (birthplace of Francisco Toledo), Aguascalientes (birthplace of Diego Rivera), etc.

In CDMX there is the Museum of Mexican Design (Mumedi), being a private museum, in that sense a Museum of Mexican Illustration, perhaps it does not have to wait for government support (less so in these times).

t is worth noting that, for example, the work of a Mexican illustrator El Chango García Cabral, with an archive of 17,000 pieces, was already named Memory of the World Mexico in a UNESCO declaration in 2012. Thanks to the efforts of his heirs.

Will the work of the mtro arrive? Suzan to such recognition at UNESCO? Of course, his heirs would first have to create an archive of all his work, originals, sketches, drawings, engravings, paintings, murals, published books, models, writings, etc. What would not surprise me is that his work could be part of the collection of a museum in the United States. Since in Mexico at the moment we do not have a Museum of Mexican Illustration.

Regresando a la pintura acrílica ... Getting back to acrylic paint ...

Well, I am preparing some paintings in acrylic paint for an expo in Cuernavaca about Lucha Libre, so they are figurative paintings but I wanted to play a little with the backgrounds, that is, have textures. I haven't painted with acrylic paint for a while now since during the pandemic I was practicing digital painting more. Digital techniques in vectors and pixels, but handmade painting is more therapeutic and reminds me of my childhood, when I stained my hands making scratches and colored spots, sometimes you just want to enjoy the material. Playful exercises of stains, textures, colors and rhythms are what I want to practice too. I found these videos that may help...

A comic that I started after talking with a friend (who travels a lot within the country) about Shamans, then I saw the call for #bikes in vigneta21, and it encouraged me to draw this story of bikes and shamans. Apply the "Tarantino formula", I mean, make fiction based on well-known characters from popular culture. It is a digital comic. During the pandemic I learned to work more digitally.
